Being Present: The Role of Awareness in Healing
Being present sounds simple, but it can feel challenging, especially when life is intense or emotions are uncomfortable. Gestalt therapy teaches that true healing happens in this presence—by noticing sensations, thoughts, and emotions as they arise, without rushing to fix or avoid them.
Imagine standing in a forest. The wind brushes your skin, birds call from the trees, leaves rustle underfoot. You don’t have to change the forest; you simply notice it. In the same way, noticing your inner experience—without judgment—creates space for growth and resilience.
Through this awareness, you can learn to navigate your emotions with clarity. You may discover that difficult feelings are temporary visitors, carrying messages about your needs, desires, and values.
Reflective prompt:
Spend five minutes noticing your breath, body, and surroundings. What emotions or sensations arise when you simply allow yourself to be present?
Call to action:
Turn this noticing exercise into a daily practice, and observe how this small act of presence changes your experience of yourself and others.
